When Petrospect Inspection Est. needed a robust robotic vehicle that would not only perform both Remote Visual Inspections (RVI) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT), but also clean away the heavy sediment often found on the bottom of steel storage tanks, they did what most of us would do - they searched the internet. But they couldn’t find anything that fully fit the bill. Luckily, they found us!

The company, based in Saudi Arabia, contacted us to see if we could customize our standard system to fulfill their requirements; and of course we said yes! Our engineers developed a new OnSpec Custom Solution that allowed our miniature magnetic crawler to combine a heavy-duty cleaning brush with an inspection camera and an ultrasonic thickness gauge. The complete system was shipped in April, and Petrospect has already put it to use.

In their initial tests, the cleaning brush was effective at moving the debris from the tank floor to allow the on-board UT probe to contact the surface and take multiple thickness measurements.

Petrospect’s General Manager, Hatem M. Abu-Ghalieh was very happy with the results, stating “The specialized system's performance has been excellent; it allows us to perform visual and UT thickness measurements of the water storage tanks while they are in-service”. He highly recommends our Multi-Mission Modular (IM3™) technology, also noting that the tether allows for easy deployment and retrieval of the vehicle, and the image enhancement system is a worthwhile upgrade.

They are currently planning more inspections jobs for their system, including RVI and nondestructive testing (NDT) of potable water and fire water tanks located in a petrochemical plant.
